A Neighbourhood Water-Information Map

See the information.
Understand the uncertainty.

A civic-design study exploring a clearer, source-aware neighbourhood water-information map. Rain Commons makes the record, its date, its source and its uncertainty visible together.

01 / Project

A little context. A clearer picture.

A precise-looking map can appear more authoritative than the information behind it. Rain Commons explores how an interface might make that gap easier to see. The concept separates a record’s source, status, date and unanswered questions rather than presenting every marker as equally certain. A schematic map and record-detail view test the information structure. All data and locations in this study are fictional, and the concept is not suitable for safety or infrastructure decisions.

The project artifacts

INFORMATION DESIGN

A map with an honest legend

The contextA civic map can create false confidence when all markers look equally certain.

The contributionSeparate fictional status types and attach a date, source and uncertainty note to each record.

Original schematic map, legend and record-detail concept.

RESEARCH METHOD

A visible chain from question to design

The contextA polished interface should not hide how the information structure was chosen.

The contributionDocument the design questions, assumptions and decisions that shape the prototype.

Method summary and decision log; no field research or real data claimed.

03 / Questions

Three questions behind the project

01

What does the map actually show?

Define the unit of information and the difference between an observation, a report and a verified record.

Data dictionary + visible source fields
02

How current is the information?

Make dates and status understandable rather than hiding uncertainty behind a precise-looking pin.

Freshness labels + status explanation
03

What should a visitor do next?

Provide a clear next action that fits the evidence and avoids implying a safety guarantee.

Source review + responsible next-step guidance
04 / THE APPROACH

A traceable design process

01

Frame

Define the information question and user task.

02

Model

Separate source, status, date and uncertainty.

03

Prototype

Build a readable map and record view.

04

Review

Test comprehension and document remaining gaps.

GOOD FIT

Civic-design discussions about information clarity, provenance and accessible interfaces.

IMPORTANT BOUNDARY

A verified dataset, public-authority endorsement or advice about water safety.

05 / THE DETAILS

Project record

Scope

A bounded concept, not a city-wide claim

Explore one neighbourhood-scale information structure with fictional data.

Contribution

Clearly attributed design work

Research framing, information architecture and interface concepts are sample author contributions.

Limitations

No operational use

Do not use the map for drinking-water safety, emergency response or infrastructure decisions.

06 / USEFUL QUESTIONS

Before we begin.

Does the map show real locations?

No. The schematic and all records are fictional, not geographic or environmental evidence.

Was field research conducted?

No completed field study is claimed. The method is an illustrative research plan.

Can the concept be reused?

Use the structure as a starting point, then obtain appropriate data, permissions and subject-matter review.
