Use AI-assisted writing to organize and clarify facts you can support, rather than generate a more impressive professional history. Supply accurate source notes, constrain the task and review every claim against evidence. Remove invented roles, outcomes and credentials, protect private information and describe the drafting process without implying independent expert review.
Prepare a factual source pack
Before asking for a biography or service description, list the facts the draft may use. Include actual roles, dates, responsibilities, permitted project examples and qualifications with accurate status. Separate these facts from aspirations or skills you are still developing. A language model can produce plausible connecting detail when a gap is left open; that detail should not become your professional history merely because it reads smoothly.
Describe the intended reader and output. A short client introduction requires different selection from a detailed employment record, but the underlying facts must remain consistent. Ask the tool to flag missing information instead of completing it through inference. If a project had shared ownership, include that explicitly so the draft does not convert participation into leadership or claim sole responsibility for a team’s work.
Use safe inputs. Remove confidential client details and unnecessary personal information before submitting material to any tool, and understand the relevant handling arrangements. A public case study may be suitable source material where you have the right to reuse it; a private archive is not automatically appropriate. Fictional examples should remain labelled and separate from the owner’s actual evidence.
Constrain the writing task and inspect the changes
Ask for clarity, structure or alternative wording rather than “make me sound like a top expert.” Specify that the draft must not add clients, credentials, metrics or outcomes. Request a list of claims that need confirmation. These instructions help, but they do not remove the need to review the result. A fluent sentence can still change the meaning of a responsibility or remove an important limitation.
Compare the draft with the source notes sentence by sentence. Check verbs such as led, founded, advised and certified because they can enlarge implied authority. Review numbers, dates and named organizations directly. If a claim cannot be supported, remove it or rewrite it to reflect what is known. Do not treat the model’s confidence or a second generated answer as independent verification.
Fictional example: a participation claim inflated into leadership
A fictional research assistant asks an AI tool to shorten a biography. The source notes say she organized interview scheduling within a larger project. The draft says she “led a comprehensive research programme” and adds an unsupported claim about business impact. She rejects both changes and rewrites the sentence to describe scheduling and coordination accurately.
She also removes a suggested certification she has not obtained and keeps an in-progress course clearly labelled. The final introduction links only to permitted examples and retains shared project ownership. This invented example demonstrates factual editing of AI output. It provides no real credential or client result and does not imply that another model, automated validator or independent expert verified the biography.
A checklist for your next step
- Supply accurate source facts.
- Separate aspirations from experience.
- Prohibit invented authority and results.
- Compare every claim with evidence.
- Correct reused copies.
Common questions
Can AI infer a skill from my job title?
Treat the inference as a question, not a fact. Include the skill only if it accurately reflects experience you can describe and support.
Does an AI review count as independent expert review?
No. Describe automated assistance accurately and do not imply a qualified person reviewed the content unless that actually occurred.
